European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the EU’s securities markets regulator, assigned with the responsibility to develop regulatory technical standards (RTS) to specify an electronic reporting format.
ESEF
European Single Electronic Format (ESEF) is a reporting format for issuers to prepare their annual financial reports (AFRs) in a single electronic reporting format. ESEF was developed by ESMA.
UNDERSTANDING
ESEF APPLICABILITY & FILING REQUIREMENTS
The eligible entities have been obligated to submit their annual reports in PDF format. In ESEF you must prepare or convert your annual financial reports (AFR) in XHTML format. The ESEF will make issuers’ reports more accessible and facilitate analysis and comparability of AFR.
ESEF APPLICABILITY
From 1 January 2020, listed companies in the European Union must file and publish their annual reports in ESEF. Starting from the financial years that commence on or after 1st January 2022, there is an additional requirement to label the notes to the IFRS consolidated annual accounts with XBRL tags. This should be done by utilizing block tags, as they are commonly referred to.
ESEF REQUIREMENT
If your financial reports contain IFRS consolidated annual accounts, your primary financial statements must be marked up with XBRL tags in a process known as tagging and using the ESEF taxonomy. The other parts of the financial report should be included in the XHTML document.
